The Enfield rifled musket, and the special hollow base Minie bullet that allowed quick reloading, achieved fine accuracy, and much longer range than the round ball muskets of an earlier generation. Enfield muskets were imported and issued by both the North and the South. The Confederacy purchased Enfield muskets from neutral England, and brought them into the south, at great risk, aboard the blockade runners. Unlike U. S. Springfield muskets, the Enfield musket is trimmed in brass. Stocked in dark stained walnut, the stock has a almost black tone. The tapered round 39" barrel is rifled with three wide lands and grooves. Nicely polished and blued, the blue black finish is in good condition with some scattered handling marks and speckles from use. The bore is bright and clean, it will make a fine shooter, for hunting, or military musket competition. Trigger reach is 14" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 9.3 pounds.
The brass buttplate, triggerguard, and muzzle cap, are retained with blued steel screws, as original. The brass has a mellow patina from long storage and a few streaks from water with black powder residue darkening it. The tall, flat, buttplate will spread the recoil from the .58 caliber bore over a large area. The brass triggerguard is fitted with a correct swivel for your military style leather sling. The forward swivel is mounted to the forward barrel band. Two brass sideplate washers are inlet flush into the stock, and counter bored to accept the two lock bolts. The bright finished ramrod has a few small scattered light speckles.
The .58 caliber bore is bright and has been well maintained. The blue finish on the exterior of the barrel has a few minor handling marks and some speckles. The barrel is stamped Armiport - Italy / Black Powder Only Cal. 58 just ahead of the rear sight. The correct Enfield ladder style military sight is marked for up to 1100 yards of elevation. The front sight has been replaced with a taller sight dovetailed into the military style base.
The color case hardened lock has the classic Enfield shaped percussion hammer. The lock plate is marked with a crown behind the hammer, and stamped 1853 Enfield on the front of the plate. This Enfield rifled musket is fitted with a hardened steel 8-1mm threaded nipple for musket caps. Order our nipple MMI-I if you need a spare.
